In Imperial times, Easter was the time when the Tsar gave a jewelled Fabergé egg to his wife. These days the eggs tend to be not so expensive, but Easter is still a glittering experience in St Petersburg, with candle-lit processions illuminating churches such as the gold-domed St Isaac’s near the Astoria.
