Charity Evening in the Hotel Astoria
On the 19th December 2006, St Nicholas’s Day, (otherwise known as Santa Claus, or Father Christmas), the Hotel Astoria will be welcoming the arrival of many real Father Christmas’, from whom hundreds of sick children and orphans will receive New Year presents. As a result of a fund-raising campaign, carried out during the course of two months by a group of leading representatives of the political and business community in St Petersburg, together with charitable institutions, funds are being raised to initiate and implement long-range programmes for the education in, and the rendering of, professional medical help, for children and their institutions.
The purpose of the evening, coming as it does at the end of the year declared the "Year of Charity in Russia", is to thank those people who responded to this call and made their positive contribution (be it in the form of an actual New Year present, or a financial donation); and also to draw the attention of people in St Petersburg to the situation of children in need.
These are the first measures within the framework of the project "Children in Need", which is aimed at acquainting society in general with these ‘special’ children, their needs and problems; to popularize the idea of private charitable works; and to look in detail at public charitable institutions. The initiators of the project include: The public charity ‘Prospects’ (whose mission is to give aid to children with serious forms of disablement, and the support they need when they become adults); the Centre for Scientific and Technical Information, ‘Progress,’; and the Astoria and Angleterre Hotels.
Financial aid is transferred by donors directly to the account of ‘Prospects’ (an organisation with an excellent reputation; since 1995 it has been housed in Children’s Home No.4 in Pavlovsk, and Children’s Home No. 3 in Peterhof; where forty families with children with severe disablements, are resident); and the Children’s Hospice, a medical establishment created in 2003, which looks after more than 150 children, who suffer from incurable diseases.
Programme of the Evening:
