Arts and Social Calendar in St Petersburg

Astoria and Angleterre Hotels continue to introduce you to interesting events taking place in St Petersburg. Summer season this year is packed with festivals, concerts and many other cultural entertainments. We have put into the calendar as many of the most exciting events that we think you, your friends and colleagues will enjoy.

10 May – 19 July XIV International Arts Festival
“STARS OF THE WHITE NIGHTS”
This festival takes place at the Mariinsky Theatre. The main theme of the XIV Festival is the celebration of the hundredth anniversary of the birth of Dmitry Shostakovich. In addition, the programme commemorates the jubilee of both Mozart and Schumann. A number of distinguished guest conductors and instrumentalists will also be taking part. 8 May – 22 October 15th Summer Ballet Season
Concerts take place in Opera and Ballet Theater of St Petersburg’s Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatory. This jubilee season features performances by the St Petersburg’s State Academic Opera and Ballet Theater named after Yakobson and the Moscow State Theater “Russian Ballet”.

May – September Free Open Air Public Concerts
“CAPPELLA COURTYARDS” 5th Summer Season
Concerts take place in Cappella Main Court. Musical summer evenings in the Cappella Main Court became a new St Petersburg’s tradition. Symphonic, choral music, chamber, instrumental, jazz and wind concerts are held twice a week. In July “Cappella Courtyards” presents the Summer Early Music Festival.

August 12 – Celebrations Dedicated to the Birthday of Tsarevich Alexey
August 14 – Blessing of the Waters and Trophies of War. Church rites and military ceremonies
August 27 – Celebration of the Samson Fountain

8 June – 12 July 14th Annual International Music Festival
“ST PETERSBURG PALACES”
Concerts take place in the palaces of St Petersburg. 2006 is the year of jubilees of great composers Mozart and Shostakovich, and it’s also a year of Armenia in Russia. The “St Petersburg Palaces” Festival feature Russian and Armenian spiritual music and performances by folk groups, international opera stars, performers from Russia, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Lithuania, Finland, Armenia, USA and Korea participate in the festival.

21 – 31 July 5th Music Festival
“GRAND WALTZ”
The festival annually presents 11 concerts according to the summer seasons that Iogann Strauss held in St Petersburg. This year concerts will take place in the Hermitage Theatre, Winter Palace, Konstantinovsky Palace, Great Peterhof Palace, Catherine’s Palace in Pushkin and Roses Pavilion of Pavlovsk, where the great composer performed his genius musical compositions.

25 – 27 July 6th International Festival
“MUSIC OF GREAT HERMITAGE”
Festival takes place in State Hermitage Museum, Great Courtyard of the Hermitage. The 2006 festival is dedicated to the jubilee of Mozart and will attract the world’s best orchestras and conductors.

30 July – 1 September 5th International Sand Sculpture Festival
Festival takes place on the Beach of Peter and Paul Fortress. The theme of this year festival is The Tree of Life. Professional teams from Austria, Belgium, Germany, Denmark, Ireland, Netherlands, Russia, Finland, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Latvia, Estonia and other countries will participate. They will have more than 100 tons of preliminary prepared sand and one week to fulfill the competition task. Sculptures will stay on the beach until September. Special stage between sculptures with the Hermitage and Neva as background will host evening performances of classic, jazz and rock musicians.

6 – 7 August 6th International Festival of National Traditions
“WORLD VILLAGE”
Festival takes place in Roschino Village, Vyborg District, Leningrad Region. Folk groups from all regions of Russia, Latvia, Lithuania, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Poland and Finland will participate in the festival.

30 August Opening of Alexandrinsky Theatre and Museum
On the day of its 250th anniversary the First Imperial Theatre in Russia will be opened after reconstruction. Dated for the jubilee, the Museum will be opened in seven halls on the 4th level of the theatre building and will present unique collections of costumes, furniture and properties gathered during more than two centuries. Excursions can be arranged.
