Year 2006 Exhibitions at the State Hermitage Museum
The year 2006 is the official worldwide Year of Rembrandt. The Hermitage Museum has started a series of events devoted to the jubilee of the famous painter, with an exhibition titled ‘Rembrandt Etchings from the D.A. Rovinsky Collection.’ This exhibition includes 340 etchings from one of the most extensive collections in the world. The exhibition runs till June 11. 9 – 22 April II Music Festival ‘Crescendo’
The festival takes place in the Large Philharmonic Hall, the 'Octyabrsky' Concert Hall and the Large Reception Hall of the Catherine Palace in Tsarskoe Selo. This international festival attracts some of the most talented young musicians, conductors, instrumentalists and singers. There are 21 performers in total, including laureates and prizewinners of international competitions, and guest artists who have appeared on stages the world over. www.philharmonia.spb.ru
23 April Easter Ball at the Yusupov Palace

10 May – 19 July XIV International Arts Festival ‘Stars of the White Nights’
This festival takes place at the Mariinsky Theatre. The main theme of the IV Festival is the celebration of the hundredth anniversary of the birth of Dmitry Shostakovich. In addition, the programme commemorates the jubilee of both Mozart and Schumann. A number of distinguished guest conductors and instrumentalists will also be taking part. www.mariinsky.ru
15 – 28 May III International Music Festival ‘Nordic Music’
The festival takes place in the Large Philharmonic Hall, the Capella, the Hermitage Theatre, the Theatre of Musical Comedy and the Maltese Capella. 26 May – 4 June XI International Festival ‘Musical Olympus’
The festival takes place in the Small Philharmonic Hall, the Capella and the Hermitage Theatre. The festival presents the best of the world’s young musicians, specifically the winners of international competitions, accompanied by well-known orchestras. 30 July – 4 August V International Festival of Sand Sculptures
The festival takes place on the beach beneath the Peter and Paul Fortress. This festival has steadily become one of the most well-known and anticipated events in St Petersburg. Each year 15 teams made up of professional sculptors, take part from around the world.
15 September – 5 October International Festival ‘Earlymusic’
The festival takes place in the Capella, the Hermitage Theatre, and the palaces of Pavlovsk and Peterhof. Earlymusic presents early European music performed by international musicians. www.earlymusic.ru
4 – 7 September V St Petersburg International Piano Festival
The festival takes place in the Capella. The festival is presented under the aegis of UNESCO. The participants are distinguished musicians showcasing the huge potential of the piano. The programme aims to acquaint listeners with all of the ways in which the piano is presented in its varied musical life - from solo performances and ensembles to piano concertos with orchestra.
October ‘Golden Sofit’ Festival
The 'Golden Sofit' Theatre Festival of St Petersburg presents the best performances of season 2005/2006 in the leading dramatic, musical and puppet theatres of the city. XII Gala Night Awards Ceremony will be the climax of the Festival. www.goldensofit.ru
